Set in June 1989, "Tank Boy" follows 12-year-old Toby during a weekend visit with his mother Serena, who lives in Italy while he attends a strict British boarding school. As Toby struggles with feeling abandoned, he deliberately injures his finger hoping to stay with her longer. Meanwhile, news reports of the unfolding Tiananmen Square protests in China captivate him. But when Serena insists on returning him to school despite his injury, Toby must decide how far he'll go to stand up for what he wants.
